800 Year Glove Harvest

As part of Ringwood’s 800-year anniversary celebrations, ZEST Arts Collective were commissioned to create a public installation that honours the town’s rich heritage. This vibrant market stall, crafted entirely from 410 gloves, celebrates two iconic aspects of Ringwood’s history: its 800-year Market Charter and its legacy of glove knitting and craftsmanship.

Local residents generously donated gloves of all colours, textures, and styles, which have been transformed into this interactive artwork. The installation reflects the town’s historic market culture, the role of local traders, farmers, and producers, and the tradition of glove-making, for which Ringwood once held its own patent for a distinctive stitch. During the early 20th century, around 900 women in the area were employed in glove production, and this project revives that spirit of community craftsmanship.

Led by artist Alice Louisa, the project brought together a team of local artists: Kane Applegate, Sophie Rawlingson, lucie smith, and Sharlott Wardner. Every element, from the vegetables and fruits to the flowers and tools, has been hand-stitched by the artists, transforming donated gloves into a living tribute to the town’s market traditions. The final piece is designed to be interactive, allowing visitors to stand by for unique photos. After its debut at the Ringwood 800 Celebration Festival on 12 July in Market Place, the installation will tour other locations across the town, including council buildings and the Meeting House.
